active seniors

As the days get hotter, it can be easy to simply enjoy the bliss of centralized air and kicking back in your favorite recliner. But there’s still plenty of opportunities to soak up the sunshine (safely) while staying active in ways that feel good for your body and mental wellbeing.

Here are seven tips for staying active during the summer that will help you move just a little, but often.

1. Walk with purpose (and sun protection)
Take it from this blog writer – your body will thank you for just a short walk in the morning or evening. Specifically, your joints, mood, and energy levels will all benefit from the simple act of taking a stroll through the neighborhood. Just be sure to avoid peak heat hours (these tend to be between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.) and wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Even a few laps around the block or the garden count!

2. Try water-based movement
Dive into activity! Swimming, water aerobics, or even just standing in a pool and moving your arms and legs can provide a full-body, low-impact workout. It’s also a great way to stay cool and socialize with others.

3. Stretch in the shade
Whether you’re sitting on a bench or standing near a railing, gentle stretching can help improve flexibility and circulation. Try raising your arms overhead, doing shoulder rolls, or slowly turning your head from side to side. Bonus points if you’re surrounded by nature.

4. Bring a friend
Activities are always more enjoyable with a friend. Ask a neighbor, family member, or fellow resident to join you for a walk, gardening session, or seated yoga class. You’ll move more—and laugh more—together.

5. Turn errands into exercise
Get active while getting things done! Instead of hopping in a golf cart or car, consider walking short distances when possible—like around a grocery store, farmers market, or local craft fair. It’s a great way to stay active while doing something productive.

6. Join a group activity
Discover something new and fun! From indoor chair yoga to dance classes or light strength training, many senior living communities offer group activities designed for comfort and fun. Look for something that matches your interests—and don’t be afraid to try something new!

7. Listen to your body
Staying active is important – but so is staying safe. If you start to feel dizzy, tired, or overheated, it’s okay to take a break and cool down. Hydration is key—so be sure to keep water nearby and sip throughout the day.

Remember, the goal is simply to stay consistent and enjoy the process. A little activity each day can go a long way in supporting your health and happiness all summer long!
