When I think about nursing homes, I think back to some of the volunteer work that I did when I was younger . Those times did not leave me with a favorable image of them, and no matter what you call them (retirement communities, nursing homes, adult care centers, etc.) could fool me. I visit when someone I care about is there, thankfully for short periods of time, but the images of my youth always start to creep up as I walk up the walkway. When I heard Wellbrooke was opening, I thought it would be just another one of the same, typical nursing homes. I went out there to visit before a loved one made a brief visit there not too long after they opened, and was very pleasantly surprised with how nice the facility looked and how cheerful and helpful the staff and residents were. Wellbrooke is a facility with high ceilings, skylights and windows, fireplaces and pubs, delis and movie theaters. Depending on the amount of care needed, residents can have a one bedroom “apartment” or a smaller room with just a bed. The floors give the appearance of hardwood, and pictures of local attractions and features line the walls of the hallways. As a throwback to the local community, the conference rooms and other areas have names like The Strand (the old forgotten movie theater in town). Let’s face it, none of us want to really end up in a long term assisted living facility, but Wellbrooke makes it about as nice as any place I’ve ever been to. If you’re in need of a place like Wellbrooke, make sure you stop in and look around before deciding on somewhere else.
